With over 35 years of experience working with dogs as a breeder, groomer, and trainer, our focus has always been on raising dogs with strong temperament, sound structure, and the ability to thrive as companions and working partners. Our programs focus on preserving the natural abilities and character of the breeds we work with. Through Yakuts of the Ozarks, we are dedicated to the rare Yakutian Laika, an ancient Arctic working breed known for its versatility, endurance, and close bond with people. We also work with Icelandic Sheepdogs, Iceland’s only native breed, valued for their intelligence, friendliness, and adaptability. With our occasional roots of West German Show Lines German Shepherds. Our dogs are raised in a hands-on environment in the Ozarks of North East Oklahoma where they receive early socialization and exposure to everyday life. We use Puppy Culture, Avid Dog and other socialization activities. We focus on health (OFA and Genetic testing), temperament, and proper development so our dogs can succeed in active homes, working environments, and family life. At Shield Kennels and Yakuts of the Ozarks, our goal is simple: preserve great breeds and raise dogs that people can truly live and work with.

Meet Bobbie Jo Berg
I have spent more than 35 years working with dogs, building a life centered around structure, temperament, and preserving the purpose behind each breed. As a preservation breeder, my focus is on maintaining the health, function, and true breed type of every dog I produce, with careful attention to long-term sustainability rather than trends. My journey has taken me from early experiences in breeding and training into developing programs dedicated to rare and working Nordic breeds. Today, my primary focus is on Icelandic Sheepdogs and Yakutian Laikas—two breeds that reflect everything I value in dogs: intelligence, resilience, strong working ability, and deep connection with their families. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Yakutian Laika Club of America, working alongside others to preserve and promote the breed and to move it forward on the path toward full AKC recognition. This work is an important part of my commitment to the breed’s future in the United States. I am actively involved in every part of my program, from thoughtful selection of breeding dogs to raising puppies with structured early socialization and enrichment. My goal is to produce confident, stable dogs that can thrive in active companion homes while still honoring the working heritage of each breed. Above all, I believe in breeding with intention, supporting every family long after a puppy goes home, and preserving the future of the breeds I work with through education, health testing, and responsible breeding practices.
